American Viticultural Area
Located in California's central valley and also known as the San Joaquin Valley, it is situated in both the Fresno and Madera Counties; the Madera AVA is along the way to Yosemite National Park. Thousands drive through this AVA without a clue to its rich bounty. Alluvial loam soils on flat terrain are characteristic of this AVA. It has over 38,000 acres of grapes planted and has been an established AVA since 1984. Some of the grapes grown here are: Muscat, Syrah, Alicante Bouschet, Tinta Madeira, Tinta Cao, Colombard, Cabernet Franc, Carmenere, Black Muscat and Souzao.Wineries include: Birdstone Winery, Fasi Estate Winery, Ficklin Vineyards, Papagni Wines, Idle Hour Winery, Quady, San Joaquin Wine Co, Westbrook Wine Farm, Toca Madera, Golden Valley Grape Juice & Wine.
