St. Helena Wineries - Collins Holystone Vineyards
American Viticultural Area
This print by artist Kerne Erickson depicts the gnarly Zinfandel head trained vines planted in 1923 located on the Collins Holystone Vineyards in the St. Helena AVA, this American Viticultural Area is within the Napa Valley AVA and is centered on the town of St. Helena, California. The expansive view up the valley includes Mt. St. Helena. The soils vary depending on the location of the valley. The lower elevations of this area are made up of alluvial, sedimentary, and gravel clay soils that are better at retaining water. Volcanic soils are more prevalent towards the eastern portion of this AVA. The appellation covers 9,000 acres along the flat narrow land towards the northern end of the valley between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. Charles Krug, one of pioneers of Napa Valley winemaking, opened his winery here in 1861.This AVA hosts more than 80 wineries.
